The Corona virus epidemic has been spreading from the Chinese city of Wuhan since the end of 2019. In humans it may lead to mild respiratory tract infections up to severe acute respiratory syndromes.
Symptoms of a possible infection can be: weakness / fatigue, cough, headache, fever, frequently accompanied by diarrhea.
In order reduce the risk of infection, AP Companies medical specialists recommend to:
- Keep the distance of at least 1-meter between yourself and other people, especially with those who are coughing, sneezing.
- Personal skin hygiene – don´t forget to wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use an alcohol-based liquid/rubs.
- Respiratory hygiene - cover mouth and nose with flexed elbow or tissue when coughing and sneezing; throw away that tissue immediately into a closed bin and clean your hands with soap and water or alcohol-based liquids/rubs.
- In case of fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical care as early as possible – especially if you have traveled recently and attended any crowded events with international audience.
Masks use
- if you are healthy, you only need to wear a mask if you are taking care of a person with suspected infection;
- use it if you are not healthy - coughing or sneezing.
- Use the mask always in combination with frequent hand-cleaning with alcohol-based liquids/rubs or soap and water.
Which treatment is available?
An established treatment or vaccine is not yet available, but intensive work is currently done in order to create a vaccine.
For the moment there is no way of medical prevention, but there is already a way of quick diagnostics.
On the 5th of January 2020, a quick test for infection has become available and is now used in the majority of European countries. The suitable laboratories can process the tests and provide the results in less than two hours.
In case of positive results, the laboratory and the treating physicians should inform the public health department within 24 hours. Meanwhile, the patient should be isolate to make sure the risk of the infection of third parties minimum.
